When we watch a Christmas pageant, we expect to see several prominent characters. For sure Mary, the angels, the shepherds, and usually the Wise Men. There are supporting roles that also must be there – Joseph and the Inn Keeper for example – but they rarely have speaking parts. In more comprehensive presentations, we might even see Zechariah and Elizabeth, King Herod – and maybe even Simeon and Anna!
Joseph certainly has a prominent role – he is in a lot of scenes. But he never says a word. At least not according to the original “script” in the Bible.
Today we look at Joseph’s role specifically – how does he fit into the Christmas story – in God’s plan for saving the world?
